Welcome to a Fiasco in the Applegate!
Wine tasting is a new experience for many people here in Southern Oregon. But tasting wines in our local vineyards and wineries is just the thing for a relaxing and enjoyable afternoon anytime, even though it may be a new experience for many
In Southern Oregon, we are blessed with as many new and unique wineries as the people who own and operate them. Many of these owner/operators began their vineyards and wineries after full careers and far-flung lives completely unique from growing grapes or making wines.
One example: Pamela and Dave Palmer. After 20 years traveling across America and abroad they discovered the joys of wine and founded Jacksonville Vineyards and Fiasco Winery in the Applegate Valley. Over the last 15 years, the two have worked to model their beautiful gardens, vineyards, winery and home after estates found in the countryside of Southern France and the Tuscany region of Italy, and the Hunter Valley of Australia.
Pamela’s passion is readily seen - her gardens surround the property. “As soon as we purchased the 100 year old homestead, I began designing and digging”, she smiles. By mid-summer her gardens are in their full glory. Pamela adds. “It’s rewarding now, to be visited by friends from Spain or Australia and be complemented on our own place.”
As pictorial as any in Southern Oregon, the vineyards surround the original 1897 farmhouse and the new winery completed in 2005. Notable for the Claret, Bordeaux and Tuscan style wines for which Fiasco Winery is becoming so well known, production is just 1,500 cases, and will top out at 3,000 cases in 5 years or so. “We want to be able to keep our size appropriate to our lifestyle and never to staff ourselves out of our favorite jobs – like gardening and meeting visitors!” Pamela states clearly, while eyeing Dave, as if they have settled this between themselves with a definitive clarity some time ago.
Fiasco Winery is unique in Southern Oregon for its exclusive use of French oak barrels, extended aging time, and estate production of its wines. We can accomplish all this because we live here on the vineyards, right next door to our winery!” declares Dave.
A visit to Jacksonville Vineyards and Fiasco Winery is a surprising “must see”, in the Applegate Valley! Be sure to visit this treasure in the Applegate Valley of Southern Oregon, just two miles west of the township of Ruch. Follow the signs!
