Jacksonville Vineyards motto is, “Think Red!” Therefore, we grow and produce primarily Red wine grapes. However, we do produce limited white wines. Planted in six separate vineyards of 18 acres, grow seven primary varieties of wine grapes. We sought and selected our vineyard sites for the world’s finest grape varieties. Likewise, we designed and planted those “wineyards” to take advantage of the micro-climate, the soils, the slopes; what the French describe as the “terrior” of our unique site overlooking the Applegate Valley.
Planting began in 1998 was completed in 2003: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Sangiovese, Zinfandel, Syrah and a bit of Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Malbec, Tempranillo and Viognier, (a white grape variety) for good measure.
Our first harvest in 2003 produced our first award winning wine, a Claret “Clar-et”. Blended carefully in our Estate Winery, our American Claret stands side-by-side with the wines of Bordeaux. In 2005 and 2006 we harvested our Zinfandel, Sangiovese, and Syrah. Harvests will increase in all our grape varieties in 2007, but will not reach full production until the vines tell us they are ready, probably in 2010.
At 1600ft elevation, a south facing slope of 6% allows great sun exposure in the summer and well needed drainage of frosty air in the spring and fall. Afternoon westerly breezes keep our clear air moving, allowing the vineyards, which are in rows aligned north-south, to receive just the right sun exposure and moisture night and day. Indeed, perfect growing conditions exist here and give us extremely well ripened fruit each fall. |
